Rotating shafts, shallow water waves and Toda flows.

The bifurcation diagram of a rotating elastic shaft, a limiting class of
solutions
of a completely integrable PDE governing the motion of waves in shallow
water,
and a Toda-like particle dynamical system all turn out to be
mathematically related.
This talk will show how the underlying structure arises and explore some
of the connections and their consequences.
