We show how hierarchical methods can drive an anisotropic mesh adaptation
procedure. This procedure can be employed with most finite element
approximations contrarily to other anisotropic methods employing a metric.We
shall present a partial result linking optimal meshes with a superconvergence
of the hierarchical estimator. This leads to many questions and open problems
which will be discussed.
