Bifurcations and transition to chaos in viscoelastic torsional flow

Abstract: It is now well established that torsional flow of a viscoelastic fluid is unstable at large shear rates. This instability which occurs even when the Reynolds number is zero, is driven by elastic forces as measured for example by the Deborah or Weissenberg number. In this talk we will discuss bifurcations that occur as the Deborah number increases. We will show transition from a limit cycle to a torus and through successive torus doubling bifurcations to chaos.
