Abstract: The motion of a particle falling down a staircase where each bounce it looses some of its energy is studied. The question of how it exactly bounces (the restitution law), is most important. For one class of laws the dynamics is completely understood. For other laws open problems abound. With this approach we hope to model the motion of a grain of sand as it falls down a sandpile.
