In this talk we will describe the recent history and the current state of the problem of vortex sheet evolution. We will discuss vortex sheets as weak solutions of the incompressible 2D Euler equations and as solutions of the Birkhoff-Rott equations. Our main result will be to establish a link between these two models for vortex sheet evolution.
