Phase Transition in Dispersive Oscillations

It is known that the solution of the KdV equation is oscillatory when the dispersive parameter becomes small. The solution usually has a limit in the weak, i.e. average, sense as the dispersion goes to zero. This weak limit partitions space-time into regions in which the limit is locally governed by multiphase modulation equations. This raises the fascinating possibility of phase transitions between regions corresponding to diffent modulated families of waves. In this talk,
